Fresh Android Apps for Mar. 30: Hulu Plus update, Doptrix Evolution, ZipTrix

Can Tetris be improved upon? Two new variations on the theme, Doptrix Evolution and ZipTrix, say, ?Yes!?

Use this weekend to tour through old seasons of television with the fresh Hulu Plus update for tablets.

There are quite a few options in streaming video, so you?re either a Hulu Plus subscriber or you?re not and that will determine your interest level in this update. The Hulu Plus app has been out for a while but this update delivers support for a specific list of Android tablets including Asus Eee Pad Transformer and Transformer Prime, Motorola Xoom, Toshiba Thrive, Acer Iconia, and others.

The new release of Doptrix picks up where the first version left off. Doptrix began as twist on Tetris that allowed you to flip and turn the board. This new version adds four new game modes: Classic+, which allows you to swap shapes before you fling them onto the board; Reflection, where the board flips with each new shape that pops up; Survival, in which new pieces are randomly placed on the board, and Distinctive, where you have a limited number of shapes to work with.

Like the first Doptrix, this one lets you choose different sizes for the boards.

This feels like a lighthearted remake of Tetris. It?s got challenges requiring you to fit falling shapes into specific holes in walls in order to remove the wall and continue playing. It?s features bonuses that raise your score for completing two, three, and four rows with one shape. Completing four with one shape is the ultimate bonus called a ?ZipTrix.?

The game gets harder as you complete more levels. You?ll find already placed shapes, blocks, and other obstacles to confound and challenge you and remind you that this is not the original game of Tetris.

Thousands of disabled commuters navigate busy streets of New Delhi in wheelchairs that look like bikes, powering themselves with their hands and steering with a metal pole.

?At first glance, Su Kumar could be taken for a bicyclist. Pedaling through the snarl of cars, trucks, buses, and donkey carts, he rolls right along with New Delhi?s chaotic traffic. But instead of using his feet, Mr. Kumar, who uses a wheelchair, pedals with his hands. He?s one of thousands of disabled commuters in the capital who navigate the city on wheels.

In a country that has few amenities for those with disabilities, innovation is critical. Kumar?s wheelchair looks like a three-wheeled bike with a bucket seat. He travels about 10 miles to work each day, powering himself with his hands and steering with a metal pole.

Kumar has been unable to walk since he was a child. But he considers himself fortunate. Fifteen years ago, a local charity gave him his wheelchair, which cost more than $100. He says it has made all the difference.

?I can do everything with this wheelchair,? says Kumar with a smile.

Wheelchair users not only navigate Delhi?s tricky streets, they have turned their wheelchairs into makeshift stores, barbershops, and vegetable stalls.
On a sweltering afternoon, a group of jabbering children surrounds a man juggling dripping ice-cream cones amid the honking cars. He moves with ease. It takes an experienced eye to notice that he?s in a wheelchair that is attached to his ice cream cart.

Increasing water scarcity in California's Bay-Delta will necessitate trade-offs; 'Hard decisions' needed to balance various environmental risks

ScienceDaily (Mar. 29, 2012) ? Simultaneously attaining a reliable water supply for California and protecting and rehabilitating its Bay-Delta ecosystem cannot be realized until better planning can identify how trade-offs between these two goals will be managed when water is limited, says a new report from the National Research Council.Recent efforts have been ineffective in meeting these goals because management is distributed among many agencies and organizations, which hinders development and implementation of an integrated, comprehensive plan.

Additionally, it is impossible to restore the delta habitat to its pre-disturbance state because of the extensive physical and ecological changes that have already taken place and are still occurring, including those due to multiple environmental stressors.

The delta region receives fresh water from the Sacramento and San Joaquin rivers and their tributaries, and ultimately flows into San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean.Water-pumping stations divert water from the delta, primarily to supply Central Valley agriculture and metropolitan areas in southern California, the Bay Area, and the delta itself.An increasing population and the operation of the engineered water-control system have substantially altered the delta ecosystem, including its fish species.Conflicts among various water users have grown, and there are sharp differences of opinion concerning the timing and amount of water that can be diverted from the delta for agricultural, municipal, and industrial purposes and how much water, and of what quality, is needed to protect the delta ecosystem.The U.S. departments of the Interior and Commerce asked the Research Council to identify the factors affecting fish species in the delta, review future water supply and delivery options, determine gaps in knowledge, and advise on the degree of delta restoration that is attainable while maintaining both an environmentally sustainable ecosystem and a reliable water supply.

It is likely that water scarcity in the delta will become increasingly severe, the report says.Failure to acknowledge this problem and craft plans and policies that address water scarcity for all needs has made delta water management more difficult than is necessary.The committee that wrote the report suggested establishing priorities for water use, accounting for trade-offs in decision making, optimizing the availability of existing water supplies, enforcing California's constitutional prohibition against non-beneficial and wasteful water use, and practicing water conservation, among other principles and guidelines.

Multiple environmental stressors -- such as dams; water pumping stations; introduced and invasive species; and changes in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations and amounts, water flow, and habitat -- negatively affect five delta fishes listed as endangered or threatened, the committee said.Successfully rehabilitating the delta ecosystem by targeting how an individual stressor impacts a particular species seems doubtful.Therefore, hard decisions will need to be made about balancing risks for different water uses, such as allocating water to support economic activity, sanitation, or other needs.In addition, alleviating any one stressor alone is unlikely to reverse declines in these species, but opportunities exist to mitigate or reverse the effects of many stressors.To increase the likelihood that actions to rehabilitate the ecosystem are cost-effective, continued analyses, modeling, and monitoring will be needed, the committee noted.

Climate change is one of the most challenging and important issues confronting the management and rehabilitation of the delta ecosystem.It is expected to affect the physical and ecological structure and functioning of the delta as well as the availability of water in the state. For instance, assessments suggest that many species will be affected by changes in runoff from precipitation and snowmelt, which would likely occur earlier in the year than currently. In addition, projected sea-level rise and extremes of precipitation could increase the frequency of levee failure and the inundation of islands.Sea-level rise also has the potential to move more salt water into the delta and alter water quality.The committee recommended that future planning should include a climate change-based risk model, analysis that incorporates data on the actual changes in delta conditions, and alternative future climate scenarios and their probability.

Additionally, the instability of levees and potential of one levee failure to affect others are liable to be major issues for achieving any measure of water supply reliability or ecosystem rehabilitation.Continuing the status quo of improving levees will not always be the most environmentally sustainable or economically defensible response in the years ahead, the committee noted.

The lack of integrated, comprehensive planning has made science less useful in decision making for the delta, the committee said.It recommended that California review water planning and management in anticipation of future circumstances. This review should devote attention to water scarcity, balanced consideration of all statewide water uses and the practices that govern them, and available engineering alternatives. In the absence of a review, it would be difficult to resolve delta water management problems in other than a piecemeal fashion.

"Science is necessary to inform actions and proposals, but it does not provide the entire overview and integration that the committee recommends," said committee member Henry J. Vaux Jr., professor emeritus of resource economics at the University of California."Societal and political considerations are also integral factors in determining the most appropriate policies toward managing the water resources in the delta and balancing the needs of all water users."

Jon Carson: Corporate Social Responsibility -- Bandwagon or Built-in?

There is a lot of noise these days around Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) with some saying it's long overdue and others saying it's really just "greenwashing." Moreover, trust in corporations is at near-record lows so there is plenty of incentive for business leaders to jump in.

There is a right way but, just as importantly, also a wrong way to jump. I've been watching and collaborating with folks in the corporate sustainability world for some time, and I think it is important to put some context into how this can and must work, and when it doesn't.

Two Kinds of Corporate Players: The first are companies whose very offering comes with high social good built in. Examples of this are BigBelly (solar powered municipal trash dumpsters), Bright Horizons (child day care centers), Zipcar (car sharing), and my own BiddingForGood (online fundraising auctions). The very nature of what these companies do is for a better society.

The second category is companies whose product has nothing to do with sustainability or social good (and in fact can sometimes go in the opposite direction) but who are trying to build sustainability and responsible corporate citizenry into their DNA.

The Problem: The problems start when, as one academic said to me, "The CEO hasn't drunk the Kool-Aid" and considerations for shareholders and senior management dominate over customers and employees. Far too many companies have set up CSR initiatives simply to provide some window dressing or PR to their corporate story. I recall one CSR manager from a nationally known outdoor clothing company telling me she had never met her CEO, there was virtually no internal support for her work, and the bulk of her activity was PR-driven. Contrast that with Patagonia, whose founding CEO Yvon Chouinard has espoused his vision for a sustainable planet since the day he started the company. Every decision made at Patagonia is made with an eye toward sustainability.

The problem gets more complicated because there is much research showing that consumers favor brands that show social responsibility. So the temptation to greenwash is real and brands do the logical thing and try to ride the bandwagon. In my own space, there are any number of companies who are trying to drive incremental sales by tying themselves to a pink ribbon or a Red campaign. The percentage of revenue actually going to good works is usually pretty small (less than 5 percent) but in most cases it works. Or does it? What happens when inquiring journalists "out" the fakers? We end up with a more cynical citizenry.

Educated Consumers and Educated CEOs: They key to ensuring that companies become increasingly sustainable in an authentic way is talking about it and letting companies (especially their CEOs) know that you care. Key to sleuthing out the fakes from the real deal is a vigilant press and an educated consumer who has a healthy bit of skepticism. The more CEOs educated on the virtues of CSR (and there are many practical bottom line benefits like motivated employees, reduced supply chain costs, and loyal customers), the more they will rationally drink the Kool-Aid. But it starts from the bottom up with citizens letting companies and CEOs know that this matters and they will take their business to brands that are showing they are responsible in how they treat employees, their commitment to their own local communities, and making sure their supply chain and corporate footprint factors in sustainability.

The key is to continue to have the discussion, for citizens to engage, use their social networks and if they see bad behavior to alert the press and to write to the CEO to let them know they are being watched.

Santorum beats Romney in Louisiana

His victory in Louisiana gives Rick Santorum bragging rights, but it does not change the overall dynamics of the race. He still dramatically lags behind Mitt Romney in the hunt for delegates.

Rick Santorum won the Louisiana Republican presidential primary Saturday, beating front-runner Mitt Romney in yet another conservative Southern state.

Although the victory gives Santorum bragging rights, it does not change the overall dynamics of the race; the former Pennsylvania senator still dramatically lags behind Romney in the hunt for delegates to the GOP's summertime nominating convention.

Even so, Santorum's win underscores a pattern in the drawn-out race.

The under-funded under-dog has tended to win in Bible Belt states that include Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama. Romney ? a deep-pocketed, highly organized former Massachusetts governor ? has persistently struggled in such heavily conservative regions.

Neither candidate was in the state as Louisiana Republicans weighed in. Nor was former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was trailing in Louisiana.

Romney took a rare day off Saturday, with no public events. Santorum spent the day campaigning in Pennsylvania and next-up Wisconsin, which votes April 3 and represents one of his last chances to beat Romney in a Midwestern state.

Early exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks showed that Santorum's win in Louisiana was one of his strongest performances to date among conservatives, working class voters, and those calling the economy their top issue. And he continued his dominance among white evangelical voters and those looking for a candidate who shares their religious beliefs.

As in previous Southern states, Romney's best showing came among those voters with annual incomes above $100,000 and those who prioritized a candidate's ability to defeat President Barack Obama in November.

The bad economy was the top issue for Louisiana voters. Most were gloomy about prospects for a recovery, saying they felt the economy was getting worse instead of better. While some national surveys suggest Americans are feeling optimistic about economic improvement, just one in eight Republican primary voters said they thought a recovery was under way.

Santorum badly needed a rebound after a decisive Illinois loss to Romney earlier in the week that moved party stalwarts to rally around the front-runner. Many urged Santorum and Gingrich to drop out of the race.
