S.Africa FDI plummets in first half of 2012

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Foreign direct investment flows to South Africa tumbled 43.6 percent in the first half of 2012 compared to the same period last year, while FDI to the continent as a whole rose by 5 percent, a United Nations report said on Tuesday.

The decline in FDI to Africa's biggest economy came amid an 8 percent drop in global FDI inflows due to heightened global economic uncertainty, according to the U.N.'s Global Investment Trends Monitor.

As South Africa battles the worst labour unrest since the end of apartheid, the numbers suggest it will face increased competition for investment from its faster-growing neighbours.

The report said FDI inflows to South Africa fell to $1.7 billion in the first six months of 2012 from $3 billion in the first half of 2011, reflecting sluggish domestic economic growth as well as a slowdown in developed economies.

"It reflects the situation in the main investors in South Africa (which) are developed countries," said Astrit Sulstarova, an economist at the U.N.'s Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which produced the report.

Slow economic growth in South Africa could also be influencing investment decisions, Sulstarova added.

The IMF forecasts South African GDP growth of 2.6 percent this year, and recently cut its 2013 growth forecast to 3 percent from a July projection of 3.3 percent, due to its close links to struggling Europe.

The IMF has also trimmed its 2012 forecast for Africa to 5 percent from 5.4 percent, but raised its projection for 2013 to 5.7 percent from 5.3 percent.

FDI flows to Africa grew 5.1 percent to $23.1 billion in the first half of 2012 after three consecutive years of decline, the UNCTAD report said, citing a return of investor confidence to North Africa, especially Egypt.

Globally, FDI inflows reached $668 billion in the first half of 2012, down 8 percent from the same period in 2011, due to a decline in inflows to the United States and the BRIC countries - Brazil, Russia, India and China.

However, China was still the world's largest recipient of FDI, with inflows of $59.1 billion in the first half.

For the first time, developing countries accounted for half of global FDI inflows, UNCTAD said, with Latin America and the Caribbean attracting greater investment along with Africa.

Flows to Europe as a whole increased by 5.7 percent, but the European Union experienced a decline of 3.8 percent.

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation Raises $1.5M; Honors Wounded Marines at Scholarship Dinner

CHICAGO, Oct. 22, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- On October 23, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation will host the Chicago Dinner for the Gravely Wounded, honoring Marine and Navy Corpsmen who have been severely wounded in combat by awarding college scholarships to their children. Nearly 13,000 Marines were wounded in action while serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom; 400 have experienced major limb amputations. The Scholarship Foundation will announce over $1,500,000 in new gifts for children of the wounded at the Chicago Dinner.

This year, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation celebrates 50 years of honoring Marines by educating their children, with consistent dedication to those who are wounded in combat. Since 1962, the Scholarship Foundation has awarded nearly 30,000 scholarships valued at over $70,000,000. Nearly 2,000 students will receive more than $6,000,000 in vocational and post-secondary scholarships for the 2012-2013 academic year.

These scholarships have a major impact on Marine families, particularly those in which a parent has been killed or wounded in combat, and make a difference at a time when the ever-increasing cost of higher education significantly outpaces the average Marine family income. Thirty severely wounded Marine families from all over the country will travel to Chicago, thanks to American Airlines' Miles for Kids in Need program, to attend Tuesday night's dinner and receive scholarship awards.

"The Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is keenly aware of the struggles military families face, made all the more challenging if a parent is severely wounded in combat. By helping send the children of Marines who have debilitating physical or emotional conditions to college, the Scholarship Foundation empowers the next generation of leaders, honors their sacrifices, and strengthens America's workforce," said Margaret B. Davis, President and CEO of the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation.

Lieutenant General John Kelly USMC, Senior Military Assistant to the Secretary of Defense, and future Commander, U.S. Southern Command, and his wife Karen Kelly will attend the Chicago dinner as guests of honor. Lt. Gen. and Mrs. Kelly's son, Lt. Robert Kelly, was killed in 2011 during his Marine Corps service in Afghanistan. At the time, Gen. Kelly was the most senior military leader to speak openly about losing a child in Iraq or Afghanistan. His son's legacy of service is honored through the Scholarship Foundation's Lt. Robert Kelly Memorial Scholarship.

"We expect Marines, regardless of rank, to stand their ground and do their duty, becoming wounded or dying in the process, if that is what the mission takes," said Gen. Kelly. "Given all they sacrifice for us, it is our duty to stand behind them and their families and provide financial and emotional support where we can. Not only does the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation make college a reality for military children, but it connects families to a support system that can help them cope with such adversity."

Scholarship recipients prove the effectiveness of the program through their academic and professional achievements. Eighty percent of recipients graduate from 4-year institutions.?

Chase Johnson, a senior psychology major at Arizona State University and recipient of one of this year's Chicago Dinner for the Gravely Wounded Scholarships, plans to continue his education at law school. Johnson's scholarship honors his father, Lance Corporal James Fain USMC (Ret.), who received the Silver Star, Bronze Star, and four Purple Hearts for his valor while serving in Vietnam. The Department of Defense estimates that 304,000 service members were wounded in Vietnam; 75,000 of them were severely wounded.

"My father's Marine Corps career has had a very strong impact on me. He met challenges in situations that that would be unbearable for a common person head on. His four Purple Heart medals are a testament to his courage. This scholarship makes college affordable for me," said Johnson.

About the Foundation: Celebrating its 50th year, the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation is the nation's oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to U.S. military families. Since inception, the Foundation has provided more than 30,000 scholarships valued at over $70,000,000 to Marine Corps children whose parents have been killed or wounded in combat or have demonstrated financial need. The Scholarship Foundation has a four-star Charity Navigator rating. For more information on the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation please visit http://www.mcsf.org/.

4 Simple Ways to Get More Mileage Out of Your Press Release ...

This post?originally appeared on the?American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

Did you know that just?14%?of releases posted on major wire services have been optimized for search? Or that press releases including an image or a video get shared?three times more?than text-only releases -? and viewers spend up to?30 seconds more?time with this content -? but nearly?half of marketers?do not routinely add images to their press releases?

Many marketers are missing out on opportunities to get their news more widely viewed and shared. So before you issue your next press release, consider these four simple tactics to amplify the reach of your news.

?

1. Write Your Release With Search in Mind

?

?

It?s no longer enough to write press release copy that tells a clear and compelling story; you must now also write your release in a way that helps searchers find you online. Reporters use search engines to find sources and story ideas, and comScore?reports?that in February 2012, U.S. searchers conducted 371 million news-related searches on search engines.

Start by making a list of the keywords and phrases that are most relevant to your company, and then cross-check these terms using Google?s?keyword tool?to assess monthly search volume and competition for your core keywords, and to see suggestions for other related keywords.

Once you have your list of keywords, use them in the headline and subhead of your release, as well as throughout the body of the announcement -? just make sure that the release still sounds natural and makes sense. Avoid over-repetition by using secondary and tertiary keywords, too.

When including hyperlinks in your release, Mark Scott, Global Public Relations Manager for?NCR, also recommends you link to what your product does or your keywords, not your product name.

?I?ve seen both big and small businesses only link to their product name, which limits the SEO value of your release,? says Scott. ?Don?t put a link to just the product name because if it?s new, there?s not a single person who is going to Google that name. Link to a keyword phrase like ?inventory management software? instead, because that?s what people are searching for.?

?

2. Include Search-Optimized Images With Your Release

Including images along with your release can make a big difference in coverage. PRESSfeed?s data shows that 80% of journalists and bloggers are more likely to cover news that includes an image.

What kinds of images work? Courtney Walsh of?Media Darling PR?encourages clients to use images that really illustrate that news they?re putting out.

?For example, if it?s a new product, don?t just include a product shot, show customers using it,? says Walsh. ??Also remember that images need to be high-resolution to be useful for most press.?

Images can also work double duty in your search strategy if you optimize the images for search by naming and tagging them with keywords.

Becca Bernstein, social media marketing manager at?Picaboo, also suggests including the release headline or the related blog post title in the name and tags, so people can find your content through an image search. For example, this approach helped her company get a recent ?How to Photograph Fireworks? blog post to the top of Google?s Image Search.

?When people search for photos of fireworks, my tips and tricks for taking photos of fireworks is now prevalent,? says Bernstein.

Bernstein also recommends adding hashtags and the URL back to the blog post or news release in the Photo Title and Alternate Photo Title.

?When I do this, it allows any image pinned to Pinterest to include a searchable hashtag and a link back to my blog. This drives more clicks and ultimately, a higher ranking on Google,? adds Bernstein.

?

3. Boost Press Release Engagement With Video

?

If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much is a video worth??Data?from PR Newswire and?Crowd Factoryshows that while adding a photo to a press release increases engagement by 14%, adding a video along with a photo actually doubles the engagement rate.

?Based on my experience, video dramatically increases impressions, interactions and syndication of news releases,? says Jim Kemp, communications manager at software company?ColumbiaSoft. ?We frequently include video with our news releases whenever possible, and have seen headline impressions regularly increase by 130% over releases without videos.?

When creating your video, James Crawford of?Crawford PR?suggests that you stick to the news -? no self-serving advertorials ?- and avoid talking heads, to hold viewers? interest. He also recommends using graphics or charts in the video to illustrate your point, and keeping the video to under two minutes.

While you can use a service like YouTube or Vimeo to host the video, Kemp strongly recommends also distributing your video over the wire with your press release to boost syndication and SEO.

?Simply placing a link to a video is not good enough. Having the video embedded in the distribution is a must,? says Kemp.

Once your video is uploaded, make sure to tag it with your keywords, and even consider including a transcript of the video so that search engines can index the content.

?

4. Use Social Media to Amplify Your News

?

social-media-640
?

The more?backlinks?that point to your content, the more value search engines will assign to it ? so you should consider executing a mini social media ?blitz? right after your news hits the wire, says?Tom Corson-Knowles, author of?How To Make Money With Twitter.

?I?ve developed a system over the years that has been incredibly useful in boosting SEO results of press releases and other announcements for my small business clients,? says Corson-Knowles. ?Basically, it involves creating a coordinated social media promotions campaign that launches within 60 minutes of the press release or news announcement.?

Corson-Knowles recommends this process:

  • Post the news on your web site
  • Tweet the news with a link to the announcement on your web site (and have employees tweet it too)
  • Post your news with a link to the announcement on Facebook (and have employees post it too)
  • Pin any relevant news-related images or videos to Pinterest (with links back to your news page)
  • Create and post a video on YouTube talking about the announcement and linking back to the announcement on your website
  • Embed the YouTube video into a blog post and publish the blog post linking back to the announcement page
  • Post the announcement page on other social networks such as Reddit, Digg and StumbleUpon

?In my experience, the combined effect of all of this promotion as soon as the announcement is made is generally a 4x to 5x increase in traffic thanks to the improved search engine rankings of the news,? says Corson-Knowles.

Finally, write tweetable press release headlines.?Data?shows press releases that are shared via social media bring an average of six people back to the news distribution site to view the release.

When writing your headline, think about whether it?s short enough to fit into a tweet, including a Twitter handle and link. Next, be sure the company or product name is in the beginning so it won?t get cut off. Double check for keywords so the tweet is searchable, and make the headline punchy enough to generate retweets.

(AP) ? Thousands of Lebanese waving the national flag packed a central square in downtown Beirut Sunday for the funeral of a top intelligence official assassinated in a car bombing that many blame on the regime in neighboring Syria.

Lebanese soldiers set up road blocks and cordoned off Martyrs Square, where Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan's coffin, draped in a Lebanese flag, was to be brought for burial.

Al-Hassan, 47, was a powerful opponent of Syria in Lebanon. He headed an investigation over the summer that led to the arrest of former Information Minister Michel Samaha, a Lebanese politician who was one of Syria's most loyal allies in Lebanon. He was among eight people killed in the attack on Friday.

"He was killed while he was defending his country," said Samer al-Hirri, who traveled from northern Lebanon to attend the funeral.

Ahead of the burial, there was a memorial ceremony attended by government officials and al-Hassan's wife Anna, his two sons, Majd and Mazen, and his parents.

Even before Friday's bombing, the civil war in neighboring Syria had set off violence in Lebanon and deepened tensions between supporters and opponents of President Bashar Assad's regime. The attack heightened fears that Lebanon could easily plunge back into cycles of sectarian violence and reprisal that have haunted it for decades.

France's foreign minister said it was likely that Assad's government had a hand in the assassination. Laurent Fabius told Europe-1 radio that while it was not fully clear who was behind the attack, it was "probable" that Syria played a role.

"Everything suggests that it's an extension of the Syrian tragedy," he said.

Dozens of anti-Syrian protesters erected eight tents near the Cabinet headquarters in central Beirut, saying they will stay until Prime Minister Najib Mikati's government, which is dominated by the Shiite militant group Hezbollah and its allies, resigns. Hezbollah is Syria's most powerful ally in Lebanon, which for much of the past 30 years has lived under Syrian military and political domination.

"The Syrian regime started a war against us and we will fight this battle until the end," said protester Anthony Labaki, a 24-year-old physiotherapist who is a member of the right-wing Phalange Party. He said the protesters will not leave the area until Mikati's government resigns and those behind al-Hassan's killing are uncovered.

Syria's hold on Lebanon began to slip in 2005, when former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, an opponent of Syria, was assassinated in truck bomb along Beirut's Mediterranean waterfront. Syria denied any role. But broad public outrage in Lebanon expressed in massive street protests forced Damascus to withdraw its tens of thousands of troops from the country.

For years after the pullouts, there was a string of attacks on anti-Syrian figures in Lebanon without any trials for those responsible. Assad has managed to maintain his influence in Lebanon through Hezbollah and other allies.

Samaha, the former minister arrested in al-Hassan's investigation, remains in custody. He is accused of plotting a wave of attacks in Lebanon at Syria's behest.

Syrian Brig. Gen. Ali Mamlouk, one of Assad's most senior aides, was indicted in absentia in the August sweep that saw Samaha arrested. Samaha's arrest was an embarrassing blow to Syria, which has long acted with impunity in Lebanon.

The car bombing struck Beirut's mainly Christian Achrafieh neighborhood and also wounded dozens of people, including children.

Al-Hassan will be buried in Beirut's Martyrs Square next to the late Hariri. Security was tight as thousands of people headed to the capital from around the country to attend the funeral.

Al-Hassan's body will first be taken to police headquarters for an official procession to the square.

Policemen and soldiers cordoned off the square, searching people trying to enter and barring vehicles. Giant posters of al-Hassan were set up around Beirut ahead of the funeral, calling him a "martyr of sovereignty and independence."

On Saturday, Mikati linked the bombing to the Samaha case.

"I don't want to prejudge the investigation, but in fact we cannot separate yesterday's crime from the revelation of the explosions that could have happened," he said.

Mikati, who opponents say is too close to Syria and Hezbollah, offered to resign after the bombing. But President Michel Suleiman asked him to stay so as not to add to the instability.

Many of Lebanon's Sunni Muslims have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Shiite Muslims have tended to back Assad. Assad, like many who dominate his regime is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Al-Hassan was a Sunni who challenged Syria and Hezbollah.

MORELIA, Mexico (AP) ? On a cool September evening, about a half hour after the sun set on the rose-colored Baroque cathedral of this colonial city in western Mexico, three men burst into a Coca-Cola distribution center on the edge of town.

The robbers pistol-whipped three security guards, grabbed thousands of pesos in cash and fled into a poor neighborhood of crumbling brick houses. Sirens screaming, state police arrived to find the white Nissan Sentra they believe was the getaway car being engulfed in flames.

"You can't even go out at night here," homemaker Yolanda Villa said, poking her head out the door of her home around the corner. "They beat you, kidnap you, rob you," her 9-year-old son Luis said, finishing her sentence.

In cities and towns across Mexico, a nearly six-year offensive against drug cartels has been accompanied by a surge in common crime: assaults and robberies that grab no headlines but make life miserable for ordinary citizens.

Some experts blame the drug war for distracting law-enforcement from pursuing common criminals. Others say drug cartels have turned to common crime as a way to fund their clashes with each other, and with troops and federal police.

Some of the first effects were felt in Morelia, the once-sleepy capital of Michoacan state, where Mexico launched its war on drugs.

The clashes in Michoacan began when local traffickers who had worked with the Gulf cartel became disenchanted with the tactics of that cartel's brutal enforcement wing, the Zetas, and formed their own gang with the avowed intention of keeping the Zetas out. The state's Pacific coastline and rugged, green countryside are ideal for clandestine operations such as methamphetamine labs.

A war erupted between the new group, which called itself La Familia Michoacana, and the Zetas, military defectors known for exploiting areas they control through extortion, kidnapping, drug trafficking and other crimes.

Less than two weeks after taking office in December 2006, President Felipe Calderon ordered thousands of troops to Michoacan, his home state, with orders to quash the violence.

Hundreds were killed across the state in battles between traffickers and in government actions. In September 2006, gunmen threw five severed heads onto the dance floor of a bar in the city of Uruapan, a crime so ghastly it made international news.

Meanwhile, common crime began to increase, with reported robberies rising 35 percent between 2006 and 2011 in the jurisdiction that includes Morelia, an international tourist attraction once best known for its Spanish-language schools, lush green parks and immaculately preserved 16th-century architecture. Robberies appear to be on track to rise again this year.

Nearly six years later, the military remains in Michoacan. Its operations have helped splinter La Familia into two dueling groups that themselves are fighting with at least two other cartels, including the Zetas, along the edges of Michoacan.

Soldiers and federal officers still clash almost daily with heavily armed cartel gunmen. Kidnappings are frequent, and discoveries of dismembered, beheaded bodies are a regular occurrence throughout much of the state. Homicides rose 68 percent in the state between 2006 and 2011. They rose 35 percent nationwide.

As for the street crime, state officials say they are making progress in Morelia through purges of corrupt and incompetent police officers and better management of the remaining police, and they say some crimes, including several types of robbery and assault, are decreasing. But Morelia residents say they don't feel safer.

Joe Maria Cazares Solorzano, president of the Morelia-based state commission on human rights, said people in the region have learned to expect the unexpected.

"Ten, 12 years ago, you never heard a siren, and never heard a helicopter. The police never flew over the city," Solorzano said. "Now it's a cause of constant anxiety, hearing ambulances, sirens, police and army helicopters flying over the city. So much has changed in terms of security, and it's very sad."

A similar wave of common crime has hit other Mexican cities.

Nationwide, robberies increased 45 percent between 2005 and the start of 2012, with the number of bank robberies almost quadrupling, from 200 to 768.

Mexicali, on the California border, saw a 70 percent surge in robberies between 2006 and 2011, although the figures seem to be falling slightly this year. The Pacific coast resort city of Acapulco, hit by a vicious struggle among small local drug gangs, saw robberies rise by around 400 percent. The northern city of Chihuahua saw a nearly 30 percent rise.

For decades, drug cartels controlled swaths of territory largely uncontested, letting them focus on moving massive amounts of narcotics north through Mexico, striking deals with corrupt officials with the least possible disruption to both sides. With the government's assault on the cartels, many have splintered, lost control of territory and gone to war against each other and against authorities.

Edgardo Buscaglia, a senior scholar at Columbia University who studies organized crime in Latin America, said the cartels have turned to other illegal businesses to make money.

"They need franchises, youth gangs working for them," said Buscaglia. "You have an unemployed army of youth and franchises that are serving all these organized crime groups. That creates a huge tsunami of ordinary crime."

On March 5, 10 blocks from the manicured lawns of Morelia's idyllic central square, two armed men held up a Bancomer bank branch, shooting a woman in the shoulder and getting away with 123,000 pesos in cash, about $13,600. Over the next seven months, Morelia was hit by an average of one bank robbery a month, including two on a single day in August. In 2006, Morelia had just five bank robberies all year.

"The authorities are focused on something else, therefore the likelihood of anyone being detained goes down," said Alejandro Hope, a former high-ranking official in Mexico's domestic intelligence agency. "This is the type of crime that affects the man on the street. Most of the fears and concerns of common people have to do with this."

Inspector Osvaldo Torres, a state police official whose jurisdiction includes Morelia, said he believes most street crime has no connection to the drug cartels.

"It's more ordinary people who do this kind of thing," he said. "In fact, here organized crime doesn't get involved in this sort of thing."

Torres said he has seen a drop in street crime over the last eight months, partly because officers are responding more quickly to crime now that their work shifts has been reduced from 24 to 12 hours and they are less tired on the job.

Federal statistics show the overall number of robberies outpaced population growth, rising more than 6 percent in the first eight months of this year, to 5,915 for a city with a population of more than 730,000 people.

Carlos Arrieta, a spokesman for state prosecutors, said he could not speak in detail about the causes of crimes that occurred before the current administration took office. But he attributed much of the rise to the increasing population of Morelia, which has expanded by roughly 100,000 people over the last decade.

"Morelia has grown exponentially," said Arrieta. "It's like when you plant a lot of trees in an orchard, you're going to have more avocados, rotten and ripe ones. It's exactly the same."

Rep. Todd Akin raises $1.6 million for Senate bid

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Missouri Rep. Todd Akin raised about $1.6 million for his Senate bid in the months after Republican Party officials sought to distance themselves from his comments on "legitimate rape," according to his filings with the Federal Election Commission.

Akin's third quarter fundraising report, which includes donations from mid-July through the end of September, shows he spent almost every dollar he raised and had about $553,000 cash on hand at the end of the period. His opponent, Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill, raised $5.5 million in the same time period, with about $2.1 million on hand.

McCaskill outspent Akin $6.9 million to $1.6 million during the period and appears likely to significantly outspend him through Election Day, based on their remaining cash.

Akin's campaign sought to put a positive light on its financial gap. McCaskill "is outspending our campaign by at least 7 to 1, yet she is losing," said Akin campaign adviser Rick Tyler.

That assertion is debatable. Although Akin points to polling showing him slightly ahead, McCaskill has pointed to other polls showing her comfortably ahead.

McCaskill spokeswoman Caitlin Legacki said the donations prove she has the money and support needed to win.

"Over the past three months, Claire has seen an incredible outpouring of support from families from across Missouri and across the country who have given whatever they can because she's a proven fighter for common sense values like protecting Medicare and Social Security and keeping federal student loans," she said.

Akin's quarterly report includes at least a portion of time when he was still being embraced by national Republicans. Before he came under fire for comments during an interview with a Missouri TV station, Akin was viewed as one of the Republicans' best prospects for unseating an incumbent. Afterward, Akin was nearly universally rebuked by Republicans and several groups, including the National Republican Senatorial Committee, announced that they would not spend any money supporting him.

After it become clear that Akin would not leave the race, several prominent Republicans -- including former Missouri Sen. Kit Bond and current Sen. Roy Blunt -- said they will support him and hope he wins, despite earlier calling for him to leave the race. Republicans need to net four seats to take back the Senate.

Separately on Thursday, the FEC posted a letter to Akin's campaign questioning about $27,000 in donations between February and March of 2012. The FEC said it wants to insure that several donations, including some from limited liability corporations, are legal. Certain types of LLCs are allowed to give to campaigns. Akin's campaign must either respond to the letter or return the donations, but no action is required until Nov. 20, well after Election Day.

Small Businesses Turn to Facebook, Mobile Marketing to Drive ...

18 October, 2012 - Social Networking

Despite economic concerns, mobile marketing is on the rise, with 8 percent of respondents currently purchasing mobile ads and 15 percent planning to in the next 3-6 months. So if you are a small business owner how is the economical situation currently affecting your marketing campaign? Please feel free to comment.

Social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter and payment apps like Paypal are helping small businesses grow, a report finds.

Social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter and payment apps such as Paypal are helping small businesses grow, a report finds.

With small and midsize business owners split on perceptions of the economic recovery, local marketing company Reply?s eighth Merchant Confidence Index, a survey of local business owners across the country sharing their confidence levels about the current economy, indicated the use of mobile marketing on free social media platforms is growing among midmarket companies.

The survey also indicated SMBs are more likely to use mobile services that facilitate transactions such as Square (14 percent) and PayPal (20 percent), with 11 percent planning to start using a mobile transaction service in the next 3-6 months. When asked what free social media platforms they use to promote their business, nearly 70 percent of respondents state they use Facebook and 33 percent said they are using the micro-blogging site Twitter. However, when asked which platforms they are paying for promotions, only seven percent are tapping into paid promotions on Facebook and only one percent on Twitter.

Growth has also been slow in other paid marketing services, such as daily deal sites and review sites. Only 11 percent of respondents said they have run a daily deal over the last six months, the same percentage as in the fourth quarter of 2011, and just 11 percent say that it is likely they will run a daily deal in the next 3-6 months. When it comes to online reviews, 46 percent of respondents said they find them helpful to their business, but only 10 percent are using paid review services and 90 percent have no plans to start using them.

Member of 'Bling Ring' pleads no contest

(AP) ? A 22-year-old woman pleaded no contest Friday to a burglary charge for stealing from the home of Lindsay Lohan as part of a group known as the "Bling Ring."

Diana Tamayo was sentenced to three years of probation by Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler. She could have faced six years in prison if convicted at a trial.

Authorities say Tamayo was one of six people charged in thefts in which more than $3 million in clothes, jewelry and art was taken from the homes of stars such as Lohan, Paris Hilton, Orlando Bloom and Megan Fox.

Tamayo's attorneys previously argued that she acknowledged involvement in breaking into Lohan's home because police officers threatened her family with immigration consequences.

Two other suspects ? Courtney Leigh Ames and Roy Lopez Jr. ? are scheduled to return to court Nov. 8. Both are charged in the theft at Hilton's home.

Authorities arrested most of the group in October 2009.

One defendant, Alexis Neiers, quickly ended her case and starred in the short-lived E! Entertainment Television reality show "Pretty Wild," which prominently featured her court case. Lifetime created a television movie inspired by the case, and Oscar-winner Sofia Coppola has filmed her own movie based on the burglaries and the fallout.

Nicholas Frank Prugo, 21, who is suspected of being a ringleader of the group, pleaded no contest in March to burglarizing the homes of Lohan and reality star Audrina Patridge, and is supposed to be sentenced to two years in prison in exchange for testifying.

Another suspected ringleader, Rachel Lee, pleaded no contest to burglarizing Patridge's home and is serving a four-year prison sentence.

A Louis Vuitton bag full of jewelry was returned to Paris Hilton after several members of the group were arrested, but much of the stolen property hasn't been recovered.

None of the celebrities testified in open court, but several including Bloom, Lohan and Hilton testified before a grand jury that indicted the six young adults on charges that included felony burglary, receiving stolen property and conspiracy.

Many spoke of the unsettling feelings they experienced to return to homes that had been burglarized.

Scientists Turn Air Into Petrol

You are so far off base that you must have done absolutely zero research here. I'm going to go down the list of why you're wrong point by point:

1. Population density is slightly lower in Brazil than in the US - Brazil has an approximate population of 194,429,773 while the US has a population of 312,488,000. Given the area measurements of each country, the population density of Brazil is 22/km (57/sq mi) and the US is 31/km (80/sq mi). This indicates that the population density of the US is approximately 40% greater than in Brazil which is a SIGNIFICANT difference. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazil%E2%80%93United_States_relations]

2. Brazil has a national power grid that covers every part of the country that's physically possible - Please cite your reference for this information as I can find zero information supporting this. Regardless, the US has a very similar system in that failure of a single reactor does not typically create a permanent outage scenario. My next point also illustrates why your argument is flawed at its base.

3. The US grid is much, much worse than Brazil's - Brazil produces a total of 484,800 GWh while the United States produces over 4,325,900 GWh of power yearly (from 2010 numbers - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_electricity_production [wikipedia.org]). Over 80% of all electricity generated by Brazil is Hydroelectric which sounds great at first until you consider that regional droughts can and have caused serious power issues in the past (2001-2002 crisis - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electricity_sector_in_Brazil [wikipedia.org]). This makes Brazil's entire power grid so heavily reliant on a single resource that it cannot sustain the demand for power in the event that weather conditions are not hunky-dory. In other words, this is much less reliable and much more prone to system-wide failures or outages than the US grid. Granted, Brazil's energy production is more renewable and 'greener', however hydroelectric damming is known to cause widespread ecosystem problems by interrupting spawning paths for fish and other animals that rely on the uninterrupted flow of water along natural riverways.

Ultimately, I'm not saying Brazil's grid sucks, I'm just saying you're wrong and you have no idea what you're talking about.

Under attack, minority Hazaras risk death to flee

QUETTA, Pakistan (AP) ? Ethnic Hazaras have seen friends and relatives killed out of religious-based hatred in Afghanistan and Pakistan, and they fear more attacks are coming. In their desperation, they are turning to human smugglers, who carry deadly risks of their own.

Smugglers operating out of small, unidentified shops sell promises of a safe and better life in Australia, though Australia is trying to discourage asylum seekers from coming. Hazaras travel to Indonesia and board overcrowded, rickety wooden boats for the dangerous final leg of the journey.

Hundreds of people have died or disappeared on the way. Others have been rescued but languish in detention centers. Meanwhile, human smugglers described as a mafia by Pakistani diplomats in Indonesia are capitalizing on Hazaras' fears, building a network in different countries.

Microsoft turns Surface tablet into a skateboard, Windows chief Steven Sinofsky takes it for a spin

Gorilla Glass 2 and a chassis forged from magnesium lend Microsoft's Surface slates some durability, but the firm's decided to prove just how tough its tablets are by turning one into a skateboard. The wheeled slice of Windows 8 is said to have been rolled out during a tour of Redmond's Surface skunkworks, but Windows chief Steven Sinofksy couldn't resist hopping on the board today and tweeting a pair of photos. You can pre-order your deck now, though something tells us this mod isn't covered under Ballmer and Co.'s warranty.

Dog Friendly Travel | Wives Unscripted

It?s no secret that our dog Sadie, is a very important part of our family and that includes when we go on vacation.? Although not all of our vacations are pet friendly (Alaska), Sadie is included in many of our travels.

Personally in our travels with Sadie, we have stayed in homes or condos/cabins with her.? We have not done any hotel pet travel simply because many hotels require pets to be crated when you?re not there and Sadie was never a fan of her crate and is no longer crated at home.? I?m not saying hotel travel can?t be pet friendly, just know the personality of your pet and what the rules are of the hotel you are staying.? I have also found that renting a condo or cabin for the weekend can be cheaper than a hotel and you have a full kitchen to cut down on eating out costs.

Everyone in the family?s favorite trip, pets included, is our annual beach vacation to the Outer Banks, North Carolina.? We rent a house for the week and everyone, including Sadie gets to enjoy the sun and sand.? There are many pet friendly homes in the various towns with rental costs to fit most budgets.? Most homes have a two pet maximum and a pet fee.? My parents also used to have a dog (she passed away in 2010) she and Sadie were happy as clams at the beach, walking in the sand, digging to their heart?s content and spending the evenings out on the porch people and dog watching.? The last two summers we?ve been joined by friends as well and they bring their dog who is another beach lover.

Dog, Outer BanksFrom an owner perspective it?s great to have the room?of a whole?house.? There?s plenty of space, we are able to cook and eat at home, so the pets maintain their schedule and everyone benefits from the relaxation a trip away provides.

Another great thing about the Outer Banks is that many of the beaches are dog friendly, so your four legged friend is as welcome as you are.? Some have time and leash restrictions, but others welcome your pet as long as they are close enough to be supervised.? Just check the local town?s website for specific instructions.

Sunrise in the Outer BanksOk so some of you are reading this and going ?that?s great, but I don?t have the vacation time, money, etc to rent a house for a whole week during peak beach season.?? And I completely understand, which is why we?ve also taken Sadie on weekend trips too.? As I said we rent a condo or a cabin that is pet friendly and have the place to spread out and don?t have to worry about crating her while we are gone, although usually we take her with us.? One of our favorite weekend trips was when we rented a cabin in Luray, Virginia. We walked a couple trails around the cabin and also enjoyed time at a local, pet friendly, pumpkin patch.

Luray VirginiaI?ve found the best way to rent places is through the owners directly, such as through www.homeaway.com or www.vrbo.com.? You can filter by location, type of property, amenities, pet friendly and more.? I?ve had several good experiences using both of these websites.? When we rent the house in the Outer Banks, we go through one of the local realtor companies.? You can pretty much do an internet search and then look on each company?s site for homes, narrowing down things by date, price, amenities, etc.

Pumpkin Patch

So next time you?re thinking of a vacation or weekend getaway, look into pet friendly accommodations so everyone can enjoy the time away!

Fans stand and cheer for author J.K. Rowling

(AP) ? Just the mention of her name, J.K. Rowling, had the audience screaming and on its feet.

The "Harry Potter" author spoke for just over an hour before a capacity crowd Tuesday night at Manhattan's Lincoln Center in her sole U.S. public appearance to promote her first novel for grownups, "The Casual Vacancy."

Dressed in a dark skirt and dark sweater blouse, Rowling chatted on stage with fellow author Ann Patchett, read briefly from her new book and also responded to pre-selected questions from fans. Rowling spoke before some 2,500 people, mostly women, gathered under the high, golden ceiling of the David H. Koch Auditorium.

Patchett, who has a wide following of her own thanks to such novels as "Bel Canto," warned at the start that she was not "particularly nice." Rowling had nothing to fear. Patchett gushed like the most avid Potter fan as she praised Rowling for inspiring countless readers and told Rowling how much she loved "The Casual Vacancy," which has received mixed reviews. It was a grownup, writerly conversation, with a few four-letter words thrown in and a brief detour into the latest phenomenon, EL James' erotic "Fifty Shades of Gray." When Patchett criticized James' writing as inferior, Rowling replied, "But that's porn."

Rowling said she felt a special connection to adolescents because of their "vulnerability" and how they come to comprehend there is "evil in the world." Stories, she said, can help them explore their feelings.

Rowling also discussed the difficulty of structuring a book and how attached she becomes to her characters. She spoke up for traditional publishers and the editorial support they offer as she explained why she didn't simply self-publish "The Casual Vacancy."

She didn't just change her subject matter when she took on the new book. She changed the process. Rowling observed that with her Potter books, she did not allow anyone ? not even her husband, Neil Murray ? to see the manuscript before she had finished. "I find that discussing an idea before I've written it," she said, is a way to kill it. But Murray was allowed early glimpses of "The Casual Vacancy."

"He was ? useful," she said.

Rowling reaffirmed that she is at work on a new book for young people. No new Potter is planned, but Rowling still has her celebrated imaginary world in mind. Discussing literary works she'd like to live in, she mentioned Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice," then confided she also dreams of more personal territory, the old school of Harry and friends.

"I do still walk in and out of Hogwarts," she said.
