Computers make Japanese men bald!

Baldies, how long do you spend per day on a computer? graph of japanese statisticsThe JHMA, Japan HeadTherapy Master Association, performed a scalp and hair condition investigation and awareness survey, and the results of these were published by japan.internet.com.

Demographics

59 men with thinning hair and 58 men without thinning hair were selected by some means for a professional examination of their scalp and hair condition, and also to answer some questions regarding hair care.

Despite my headline, it would be rash, of course, to simply conclude that since people with thinning hair spend longer on average per day on a computer, it is the computer use that is making them that way. It could just as easily be more stress from a longer work day, worse eating habits due to a long work day, snacking in front of the computer, missing out on sleep, or a hundred and one other possible causes that one could come up with.

Furthermore, I didn?t know that massaging conditioner all the way in was bad! I?ll have to fix that from tonight

Research results

First of all, the hardness (lack of suppleness or moisture?) of the scalps of the men under investigation was measured by professionals from the JHMA, and the results presented split by balding and not balding men.

Hardness of scalp

? Thinning hair
(N=59)
Not thinning hair
(N=58)
Very hard scalp 25% 0%
Hard scalp 34% 31%
Normal scalp 14% 27%
Soft scalp 20% 33%
Very soft scalp 7% 9%

Q1: How long on average do you spend per day in front of a computer? (Sample size=117)

? Thinning hair
(N=59)
Not thinning hair
(N=58)
12 hours or more 44% 31%
7 to 11 hours 27% 22%
4 to 7 hours 20% 31%
Less than 4 hours 8% 16%

Q2: How long on average do you spend between first applying shampoo until rinsing it off? (Sample size=59, thinning hair)

Less than two minutes 27%
Two to three minutes 19%
Three to four minutes 37%
More than four minutes 17%

The shorter the time the better, as shampoo may dry out the hair and scalp.

Q3: How often do you massage conditioner, treatment down to your scalp? (Sample size=59, thinning hair)

Usually do it 36%
Sometimes do it 13%
Don?t do it much 24%
Don?t do it at all 27%

The less often the better, as conditioner or treatment may damage the scalp.

Korea's New Megacity Plan to Cost $275 Billion | EYES IN EYES IN

Local news outlets call the scale ?astronomical.? Some question its economic feasibility. Either way it is one hell of an ambitious tourism venture. The project in question is the creation of a gigantic 'tourism city' called 8City. Plans are for it to be built on the islands of Yongyu-Muui in the port city of Incheon, next to Incheon International Airport.

Plans for the city include travel and leisure facilities from luxury hotels, condominiums, casinos and shopping malls to a theme park, a water park, a Formula One racing track, a 50,000-seat concert hall, a medical tourism-based "healing town" and a ?hallyu town? showcasing Korean entertainment.

An all in one tourism destination that visitors won't want to leave. But not just any visitor. The project aims firmly at the massive and growing market of mainland Chinese tourists.

It incorporates the number '8' into both its name and physical design directly in order to attract Chinese visitors, as the number symbolizes good fortune in Chinese culture.

Incheon City officials announced the cost of the project to be around ?300 trillion, or US$275 billion, to be funded by the city in conjunction with foreign and domestic investors.

To put that in perspective, that figure is more than the GDP of Singapore, according to World Bank figures.

Developer Eightcity Co., the company formulated for this project, claims the 80-square-kilometer 8City will be the largest single tourism project in the world, and will be "three times the size of Macau." Macau's land size is approximately 28.2 square kilometers.

The main landmarks will include the 'Inner Circle' -- a ?smart? tubular 14-kilometer building along the coast -- and the 'Megastrip,' which, at 200 meters high, 880 meters wide and 3.3 kilometers long will be the world's largest single architectural unit (when it's built, that is.)

The gross surface area of the Megastrip will be 4.85 square kilometers. That's larger than the Boeing Everett Factory's usable floor space, and larger than Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3. The Megastrip will be filled with hotels, offices, shopping and other tourist attractions.

Incheon City estimates 8City will create 930,000 new jobs and attract 134 million tourists by 2030.

    Feasibility

Due to its sheer scale, some are questioning whether this project will actually come to fruition.

Yonhap News Agency published an article titled "Will financing actually be possible for the Yongyu-Muui ?300 trillion development project?" pointing out the money that has been raised so far does not constitute half the estimated cost for land compensation (link in Korean).

"All discussions about financing and investors will have to commence after the land compensation begins next year," the spokesperson for 8City told CNN. The first stage of development is slated for completion by 2020, while the projected end date for the entire project is 2030.

"Development plans for 8City are currently under review by the Free Economic Zone committee," said a Ministry of Knowledge Economy representative.

Chart: Here's How Many Kickstarter Projects Are ... - Business Insider

Pebble, the most funded Kickstarter project ever, raised more than $10 million from peers.

More and more people are posting projects on Kickstarter, hoping to get their business ideas funded by peers.

But that doesn't mean their ideas are finding any more success on the crowdfunding site.

In the past six months, the amount of Kickstarter projects posted has grown 50% to 76,909, GigaOm reports.

Less than half of the projects -- 44% according to a Kickstarter spokesperson -- have successfully meet their monetary goals. And on Kickstarter, it's an all or nothing deal. If posters don't raise the full amount of money they're seeking, they don't see a dime.

When you think about it, 44% is actually a pretty high success rate. The average fundraising on Kickstarter is between $1,000 and $10,000, so it's no small amount of cash that's being swapped between strangers.

In some categories, the likelihood of Kickstarter success is higher than in others.

"Dance" is the most successfully funded category on Kickstarter; 70% of those projects successfully meet their goals. Although projects like the Pebble watch have been wildly successful, the technology category is one of the least successful on Kickstarter. Only about 33% of those projects are funded in full.

Here's a chart from Gigaom, which breaks down Kickstarter success by category:

Did wild birds cause the 2010 deadly West Nile virus outbreak in Greece?

ScienceDaily (Nov. 12, 2012) ? In 2010, 35 people in Greece died from a West Nile virus (WNV) outbreak, with a further 262 laboratory-confirmed human cases. A new article published in BioMedCentral's open access Virology Journal examines whether wild or migratory birds could have been responsible for importing and amplifying the deadly virus.

WNV is a flavivirus of major public health concern, spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Discovered in Uganda in 1937, it was only sporadically reported up until the 1990s, after which disease outbreaks were reported world-over, leading to WNV being given epidemic status. Studies have shown that humans infected with WNV do not have viremia levels high enough to infect new mosquitoes and hence pass on the virus. Birds, however, do develop viremia levels sufficient to infect mosquitoes, hence serving as amplifying hosts for WNV.

In order to investigate whether wild birds were exposed to WNV prior to the 2010 outbreak in Greece, Charalambos Billinis and his co-authors tested serum and tissue samples from 295 resident and migratory wild birds harvested by hunters prior to and during the outbreak. These samples were collected for the purposes of the authors' participation in an FP7 EU wildlife diseases research project ("WildTech"). All sampling sites were in flying distance for avian species. Using immunofluorescence assays and virus neutralization tests to analyze samples for the presence of WNV-specific antibodies, the authors found 53 avian samples with WNV neutralizing antibodies. Importantly, 14 positive serum samples were obtained from birds up to 8 months prior to the human outbreak, and genetic determinants of increased virulence were present in these samples.

These results provide evidence to implicate that wild birds could have allowed WNV maintenance and amplification before and during the 2010 virus outbreak. Lead author Billinis commented, "The finding that migratory birds were previously exposed to WNV prior to their arrival in Greece during autumn migration suggests that avian species with similar migration traits could have introduced the virus into Greece."

The newly appointed editor in chief of the journal, Professor Linfa Wang, said, "This study shows the importance of wild bird surveillance for zoonotic diseases such as West Nile virus. It also demonstrates that pre-emergence surveillance in wildlife can be a powerful tool as part of an effective pre-warning system to prevent and/or reduce the impact of emerging zoonotic diseases. It is a great example of the need for a One Health approach to combat emerging infectious diseases."

Wildlife surveillance systems put in place could possibly provide timely information regarding virus introduction and circulation, further dispersion or introduction of new strains.
