Local animals group need foster families | Animals Matter | a mySA ...

Hershey (left) is a three-month-old Chihuahua mix who has a broken leg. He will need to be in a foster home for approximately six weeks to rest while his leg heals. Pedals (right) is a five-week-old kitten who will need to be in a foster home for approximately three weeks while she gains weight and stays healthy until ready for adoption.

Local animal groups are sending out desparate pleas for foster volunteers to help with pets coming into shelters, mostly litters of kittens this time of year that may need a little time in foster care before finding their new home.

San Antonio Humane Society?
The San Antonio Humane Society says they had?66 foster animals in April and May; mostly underage puppies and underage kittens who need foster families to feed and care for them until they are old enough for adoption.

?The role of a foster parent is to create a nurturing environment to allow a foster animal to grow, heal, socialize and become adoptable,? says Cathy McCoy, Director of Communication,?San Antonio Humane Society.? ?We provide foster families with all the supplies they need such as food, littler, toys, bedding, and even medical care. All fosters need is a willingness to learn and a lot of love to give.?

If you would like to help, but are unable to foster at this time, the San Antonio Humane Society is?always in need of donations of kitten and puppy milk, bottles, puppy pads, puppy pens, heating pads, and flea combs. Click here to find out more about fostering for the SAHS.

San Antonio Pets Alive!
San Antonio Pets Alive! is looking for bottle-baby and kitten-feeder volunteers at their?9107 Marbach Rd. Suite 109 location. Currently, their website says they have over 140 kittens in their care. They need people to come out to their facility to bottle feed about 50 of the kittens and help clean cages.?Evening volunteers are?desperately needed. Check out their website and then sign up to volunteer.

Animal Defense League
The Animal Defense League receives hundreds of requests per month for foster care, mostly for newborn kittens and puppies, pregnant and nursing cats and dogs as well as injured animals.?Foster families play a key role in helping ADL save many more animal lives.?Some pets?need to be fostered for only a few days, while others may need extended care.?ADL will provide food and supplies so there are no out-of-pocket expenses.?To foster an animal for ADL,?contact?Bonnie Driscoll at?bdriscoll@adltexas.org.?

If you feel you cannot commit to being a foster parent at this time, but you would like to support ADL?s program, they are always in need of the following items and supplies. Click here and scroll down for a list.

Animal Care Services
With the overwhelming number of homeless pets in San Antonio, the city shelter is always full, so fosters are also always needed to take healthy dogs into foster care, just to relieve the space issues.?ACS estimates they?need about 200-300 foster families a month to handle the number of dogs and cats that come into Animal Care Services.?To volunteer in their foster care program, visit www.saacs.net or email Clare.Joscelyne@sanantonio.gov.
