The sub-sub-plot of the day was the story that the GOP had proposed attaching a Chained CPI requirement to a fiscal cliff deal. Basically, this means that the annual cost-of-living adjustment in Social Security would be lower than it is now.

Liberals hate the idea because it's a benefit cut.

And now as the GOP isn't pushing it anymore either (for now). John McCain went so far as to call it a "losing hand."

Marco Rubio went so far as to say that while the GOP is not pushing for these cuts, Obama is.

The thing is, if there's ever going to be a politically palatable cut to Social Security, this is probably it, since it's pretty technical, and nobody will get what it is, and it doesn't sound like a cut.

As Phil Klein points out, if the GOP can't even get behind this tweak, there's very little hope for anything substantive in the big picture.

There are two big stories with entitlement cuts.

One is that politicians are open to them in theory, but then don't want their fingerprints on the weapon when it's time to do the deed.

The other is that it's usually Republicans that end up killing entitlement tweaks. Every time DC gets close to a "grand bargain" (something which Obama would clearly be willing to sign off on), Boehner or his caucus kills it.

And that makes sense. If you're the party of fighting deficits, then you have a lot of lose politically by taking deficit reduction off the table in the form of actual progress.

A YouTube video from Thaistar2012 tells the story of a smartphone that's lost and found. (Eww!)

The latest "stupid animal tricks" video to go viral shows an elephant at a Thai nature park nabbing a woman's smartphone and swallowing it down, followed by the recovery of the phone when it's heard ringing from a pile of elephant dung. Is it fake or real?

There are the usual signs of a hoax ??including the incredibly low quality of the video, and the staginess of the reactions to the loss of the phone and its unappetizing rediscovery. But beyond that, there are the scientific questions: Do elephants really go for foreign objects like phones? How long does it take for something to make its way from one end of the elephant to the other? Would a smartphone still work after passing all the way through?

For answers, we went to Murray E. Fowler, professor emeritus at the UC-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine and co-editor of a textbook titled "Biology, Medicine and Surgery of Elephants."?It turns out that Fowler has some personal experience with the ins and outs of elephant feeding habits.

He recalled a time when he drove a van full of students to a zoo, put the key in the pocket of his coveralls, and then paid an up-close visit to one of the elephants. When it came time to get back in the van ... no key. Fowler had to retrieve a spare from the school.?"About four days later, they found the key in a stool sample from the elephant," Fowler said. He figures the elephant must have snagged the key out of his coveralls, or picked it up where he dropped it.

Based on that experience, plus Fowler's professional knowledge of an elephant's innards, he says it's possible that the animal could take an iPhone and swallow it. "I can verify that," Fowler said. But you couldn't expect to recover the phone from the poop on the same day. On the contrary: Experts say it takes between 18 hours and several days for an elephant's alimentary canal to do its work. (Fun fact: Elephants digest and absorb only 44 percent of what they eat.)

If that's the case, the woman would have to come back later to pick up her lost item, presumably after it has been found and cleaned up. Moreover, it's highly questionable whether the darn thing would work after all that time?? and not just because the battery ran down. "There'll be acids and various and sundry enzymatic situations," Fowler said.

Bottom line? Even if you presume that the video is not a hoax from start to finish, the idea that you could recover a working mobile phone after it's worked its way through the digestive tract smells fishy ... or in this case, elephant-y. To me, the mere idea of sticking the phone into the dung so that you can pull it out for the sake of a YouTube video is creepy enough. But what do you think?

Why Mostly Men at the Indian Anti-Rape Protests?

A tight circle of hundreds of protesters chanted angrily in a heavily policed New Delhi alley on Sunday afternoon. They waved placards calling for the hanging of six men?including a 17-year-old?accused in the gang rape of a woman who died over the weekend in the hospital. ?They demanded a deadline for the hanging: Jan. 26, the annual celebration of the nation?s independence, which arrived courtesy of the nonviolent "eye for an eye makes the whole world blind? leadership of Mahatma Gandhi.

?So what he is minor .. [sic]? read one man?s sign in gothic black handwriting and accompanied by a crude drawing of the accused teenager with a noose around his neck, ?hang him too.?

The protesters chanted angrily, as television news crews broadcast their rage around the world. They seemed irate and bent on revenge.

And almost all of them were men.

Thousands of Indians have taken to the streets to protest the vicious Dec. 16 raping of a 23-year-old medical student, who boarded a bus with a man and then was attacked by several men, including the driver. The mass protests are a sign that India might finally be ready for change, that a country with a history of indifference and even tacit encouragement of rape might finally be learning a different way to respond. And in India?s deeply sexist society, it is probably the voices of these men that will deliver publicity unlike any seen before about the crisis facing India?s women and girls.

But change doesn?t happen overnight. There are women out on the streets, some from India?s long-suppressed women?s movement, to fight for stronger rape laws and other legal protections. But those women risk being groped by fellow protesters or shouted down. And the men on these same streets seem to be operating just as much from a revenge instinct as from any desire for meaningful social, political and legal changes.

?I?m really happy about men protesting,? said Ritupurnah Borah, a queer feminist activist who has helped organize the Citizen?s Collective Against Sexual Assault. The collective has been coordinating women?s safety protests every month for the past year. She said those protests were attended by virtually no men. Like many women?s activists and groups in India, Borah opposes the capital punishment that so many of the protesting men seek. She said capital punishment is not a deterrent against crimes such as rape and that profound social changes are instead needed to protect women in India.

?But recently, because men?s voices are more audible, they take over many of the protests. It?s really sad because we don?t want goons?we want people who are really concerned about violence against women to come out on the streets. We?ve been requesting the men to slop sloganeering and let the women slogan, but it?s not happening. They say, ?Oh, come on, we?re coming out and helping you.? ?

Some of the anti-rape protests during the past two weeks have been dominated by men, as was the case on Sunday; others have been roughly half women and half men. While men shout and hold brash signs calling for capital punishment, the women tend to light candles. They sit with sad faces. They silently hold signs that call for an end to violence against women, for peace after death for the victim, and for systemic changes in government and in society. For them, this is just the latest chapter in a drawn-out fight that for these women has lasted decades and enjoyed little progress. ?We want women dignity back [sic],? read a sign held by two young women as they stood mournfully at the periphery of the circle of angrily chanting men.

Some male protesters appeared steadfastly sincere about their desire to send a message to the government that crimes against women must end. But many more seemed to be interested in protecting women in the more old-fashioned, oppressive way.

New emergency manager law signed in Michigan

DETROIT -- Gov. Rick Snyder put a new emergency manager law on the books in Michigan on Thursday, weeks after voters repealed a version that gave sweeping powers to a single person to overhaul financially distressed communities.

The new law, passed by a Republican-controlled Legislature, will give local governments and ailing school districts the opportunity to choose their own remedy. If a review team finds that a financial emergency exists, those communities can request an emergency manager, ask for a mediator, file for bankruptcy or introduce a reform plan with the state.

"This legislation demonstrates that we clearly heard, recognized and respected the will of the voters," Snyder, a Republican, said in a statement. "It builds in local control and options while also ensuring the tools to protect ... residents, students and taxpayers."

The law won't kick in until late March. Under the old law, the power to send an emergency manager rested solely with the governor. It was a threat to labor unions because managers had the power to throw out contracts.

Under the new law, a manager still would have the power to change contracts. But local officials also have the option to develop an alternative plan if it saves the same amount of money as the manager's proposals. Local governments can remove a manager after one year with a two-thirds vote of its elected officials.

The philosophy behind the law is that troubled local governments may lack the political consensus needed to get back on track or they simply need expertise to get past their financial problems.

The law includes a $770,000 state appropriation to cover managers' salaries, a provision that would shield it from another statewide vote because spending bills are immune to referendums. Rep. Tim Greimel, D-Auburn Hills, accused Republicans of going to "extreme lengths" with that provision.

Managers are working now in Benton Harbor, Ecorse, Flint, Pontiac and Allen Park, as well as in the Muskegon Heights, Highland Park and Detroit school districts. But they're operating under a decades-old law with fewer teeth that automatically kicked in after the November election. The communities have struggled with lower tax revenue due to a drop in property values and a weak economy.

Allen Park, near Detroit, was stable until it sold bonds for a movie studio that went bust. Residents recently voted down a tax increase.

Ray Holman, a lobbyist for a UAW local that represents 17,000 state workers, gathered signatures to get a repeal of the old law on the ballot. He said the new law is "only slightly better" and predicted critics would explore a legal challenge.

"It's the exact same law with window dressing. Ultimately, it's a dictator's law," Holman said. "It's disingenuous to say Gov. Snyder listened to the people. He's flat-out wrong."

Threatened with a state takeover last spring, Detroit is operating under a set of financial reforms negotiated by the Snyder administration and city officials. The city, however, continues to struggle and is under yet another review.

Snyder promised last week that some type of "action will be taken" in Detroit in the weeks ahead, but probably before the new manager law takes effect.

The City Council has sent a plan to state Treasurer Andy Dillon that calls for layoffs, days off without pay, the sale of some assets and possible pay cuts, council members said during meetings Thursday at the Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News.

They said the money-saving moves exceed those proposed by Mayor Dave Bing, who has said 400 to 500 layoffs, or 5 percent of the workforce, are likely in the new year.?

Clinton vs. Rubio in 2016? Who Will Run?

COMMENTARY | Mitt Romney, in retrospect, was a vanilla candidate with weak convictions who the patchwork coalition of GOP voters begrudgingly accepted as a compromise.

There will be a large and vocal presence among Republicans, especially in the Tea Party and especially during the nominating process, calling for a more conservative candidate a la Rick Santorum.

But in the immediate aftermath of Obama's re-election several party leaders made clear that they felt softening the party line on social issues from marriage equality to immigration was the only way to fight the coalition built by Obama. Is it possible to marry the conservatism required for tea party support with the softer tone on social issues most party leaders believe is necessary to win a general election?

The few public opinion polls currently available show that Florida Sen. Marco Rubio is the early favorite among those polled. Rubio's resume is basically perfect. A second generation Cuban-American from a swing state which the Republicans lost in 2012. The tea party publicly labeled him as their preferred Vice Presidential candidate weeks before Romney chose Rep. Paul Ryan.

And he was one of the first politicians to speak out after the election on what direction the Republican party needed to go in upcoming elections. If I were a betting man, I'd put my money on Marco Rubio in 2016.

For the Democrats, Joe Biden is an obvious choice. He left the door open when asked if he thought 2012 would be the last time he voted for himself. And the last time a Democratic president served two terms, his two-term vice president succeeded him as a candidate.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo is a popular choice as well, as a liberal trailblazer on issues ranging from marriage equality to tax reform.

But the winning coalition built by Obama and his team depended on appeal to minorities. African Americans, women, LGBT voters, Hispanic voters and almost every other "minority" group in the country voted overwhelmingly for Obama.

The party would be foolish for turning its back on those groups in 2016. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who will be stepping down in 2013 would be a clear nod to that coalition again. Her credentials as a senator, proactive First Lady, the nation's top diplomat, and experience on the 2012 trail make her the clear choice for Democrats in 2016, especially after a two-year break.

A quick and easy eye test could offer an effective way of measuring how fast multiple sclerosis is progressing in someone with the disease.

Researchers performed scans on 164 M.S patients that measured the thickness of the lining at the back of the eye.

The team from John Hopkins University found patients with thinning of the retina had both earlier and more active forms of the disease.

The scan, known as Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), takes just a few minutes per eye and can be performed at a GPs surgery.

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects nerves in the brain and spinal cord, causing problems with muscle movement, balance and vision.

Around 8 out of 10 people with M.S. have a type known as relapsing remitting, which means people will have periods where symptoms are mild or disappear followed by flare-ups. After around 10 years half of patients will develop secondary progressive disease where symptoms get worse and there is little remission.

It is difficult for doctors to monitor M.S. because its course can be unpredictable. Scientists believe OCT could provide a good way to do this.

?As more therapies are developed to slow the progression of MS, testing retinal thinning in the eyes may be helpful in evaluating how effective those therapies are,? said study author Dr Peter Calabresi.

The team measured the eyes of 164 M.S patients, 59 of whom were showing no symptoms, every six months for around 21 months. They also gave them MRI brain scans once a year.

The study found that people with MS relapses had 42 per cent faster thinning than people with MS who had no relapses.

The MRI scans revealed people with MS who had signs of active inflammation - known as gadolinium-enhancing lesions - experienced 54 per cent faster thinning.

Meanwhile people whose level of disability worsened during the study experienced 37 per cent more thinning than those who had no changes in their level of disability.

The study was supported by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the National Eye Institute and Braxton Debbie Angela Dillon and Skip Donor Advisor Fund.

Amazing Photos of Florida Panther and Cubs Bring a Bright Spot to a Deadly Year

This has been the deadliest year on record for Florida panthers (Puma or Felis concolor coryi), but the critically endangered big cats also ended 2012 with some pretty amazing news. For the first time, an uncollared female has been photographed carrying her cubs to a new den.

The photographs, taken by motion-sensitive camera traps two months ago, were released by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) last week. They show a mother panther carrying three kittens in her mouth, one at a time, as they travel to a new location. Kevin Godsea, FWS project leader for the wildlife refuges in the region, told the Huffington Post the mother may have been moving the cubs to drier ground after heavy rains. Many Florida panthers carry radio collars, allowing biologists to track their movements?and find their bodies if they stop moving?but this uncollared female was not regularly monitored. Biologists didn?t even know that she had any kittens, let alone three of them, until they checked the camera traps.

Estimates for Florida panther populations range from as low as 100 animals to as high as 160. Although they still enjoy a relatively high birth rate, the cats die as quickly as they can breed, usually after being struck by motor vehicles. So far this year 17 panthers have been struck and killed by cars and trucks on Florida roads. Another nine have died from other causes, often injuries resulting from conflict with other panthers, as the cats are very possessive of their territories. With a few days to go in 2012, this is already the deadliest year on record for the panthers, beating the previous record of 24 dead in 2009.

Ultimately, this year?s deaths may total more than 26, or have further consequences. As Craig Pittman reported in the Tampa Bay Times, a female found dead on December 11 had previously been seen rearing two 9-month-old kittens. The mother?s cause of death is still under investigation and wildlife officials are looking for her progeny, which are unlikely to survive on their own.

Many panthers in Florida are actually no longer pure members of their subspecies, due to an import of eight female mountain lions (Puma concolor) from Texas in 1995. At the time, the Florida panther population was as low as 20 to 30 cats. Adding females to the population, according to research published December 17 in the Journal of Animal Ecology, refreshed the panthers? gene pool and improved breeding productivity. The University of Florida researchers suggest that the panther population would have fallen below 10 individuals by 2010 without the influx of the new breeding partners. Nonetheless, the cats today still show signs of inbreeding, such as crooked tails.

The good news is that Florida panthers are breeding. According to the Huffington Post report, 40 panther kittens have been born this year to collared parents (the only ones for which reliable breeding numbers are available). The bad news is that the animals are still dying as quickly as they breed, and the rapid development of Florida?s wild habitat will only make this worse in the future.

Last year, much of the Web's post-Christmas ire was directed at Twitter users who, like ungrateful brats, complained that Santa brought the wrong color iPhone?or failed to deliver a car. This year, Internet denizens are upset that some people?are?bragging about their new guns???on Twitter and Instagram.

In the wake of?the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.,??gun control has once again?become a topic of national debate. Yet?the?controversy?isn't preventing those who are excited about the?firearms Santa brought from joyfully posting about them on social media.

No matter which side of the gun control debate you're on, these images ??first noticed by?the Verge's T.C. Sottek?and?the Atlantic Wire's Rebecca Greenfield?? could?make you uncomfortable.?There are plenty of men and women ? some who appear to be teenagers???who appear to be disregarding the NRA's three fundamental?rules of gun safety, particularly keeping fingers away from triggers, and pointing the guns only in safe directions. It's especially problematic?since these posts are often accompanied by the #NRA hashtag.

Not that the recipients seem to care.?"I got just what I wanted," one Twitter user wrote. "An Armalite semi-automatic AR-15 rifle. It's like the Christmas Story, but I'll shoot more than my eye out."

"Aw what a nice #assultRifle #santa left me haha (plus a box of 1200 bullets)," the caption on a young woman's Instagram photo said,?next to the image of a rifle resting on the hearth?next to a pile of wrapped Christmas gifts. (The girl later claimed, in a comment under her own post, that the gun was her dad's.)

Another Instagram user proudly posed in what appear to be fur-lined boots and a fur vest while holding her prized present. "Furs & Guns," she writes, "yes, it was a red-neck Christmas."

Searches for hashtags such as #AR15, #NRA, #Bushmaster, #gun and #SecondAmendment reveal plenty of photos of folks posing with their new firearms in front of Christmas trees and declaring how much they love their gifts.

One does have to wonder whether we'd pay as much attention to these images if it weren't for the recent national?focus on firearms and the anticipation of tighter gun control measures. It's also worth asking if this apparent?surge in gun pride isn't a side effect?of the Newtown?tragedy as well.?As a prior report points out, while "a spike in gun?sales is common after a mass shooting," and "the latest rampage has generated record sales in some states."

Between those sales statistics and social media's never-ending?craving for drama, perhaps it was inevitable that last year's whiny gift?recipients?surrendered the spotlight to this year's gift-wrapped rifles.

Toyota sees 2013 output at 8.7 million vehicles

TOKYO (Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp expects its global production under the Toyota and Lexus brands to hit 8.7 million vehicles in 2013, nearly the same as the 8.74 million vehicles it expects to have produced in 2012, the Japanese automaker said on Wednesday.

Global sales of Toyota and Lexus brands are expected to be at 8.9 million vehicles in 2013, up 2.5 percent from the sales expected this year.

Group-wide, Toyota expects to produce 9.94 million vehicles and sell 9.91 million vehicles in 2013. The group-wide forecasts include figures at Daihatsu Motor Co and Hino Motors Ltd .

For 2012, Toyota expects its group-wide production to be 9.92 million vehicles globally, up 26 percent from a year ago, as it recovers from a huge earthquake in Japan and Thai floods that took place in 2011.

It sees its group-wide global sales for 2012 to be 9.7 million vehicles, up 22 percent.

2. Don?t be intimidated

You don?t have to be highly erudite to be a writer today. This is because there is a readership for all sorts of writing ? formal and informal writing, personal writing, informative writing, opinion pieces, blogs and much else besides. So you don?t have to fit any particular mold to become a writer.

3. Read, read, read

No reading is a complete waste of time. Reading broadens your vision, educates you, makes you think, improves your vocabulary, informs you and basically increases the sum of your knowledge. A well read person is automatically better equipped to become a writer.

For the same reasons that reading is important, observation is important as well. Watch how people speak, move, behave, interact ? this is wonderful fodder for creative writing.

5. Check your facts

Inaccurate information or facts that don?t check out can really put off a reader, particularly in informative or nonfictional writing. So always do your research and make sure that any statements you make are factually correct.

6. Write regularly

Getting into a habit of writing will ease the process. You could start a journal or a personal blog to keep yourself writing regularly.

7. Take breaks

Breaks can help refresh the mind and improve the creative process. A short break is when you?re likely to be struck by the best ideas!

8. Enjoy yourself

Whichever type of writing you decide to do, remember to enjoy yourself. Writing is a creative process that has its own rewards.

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Dallas Cowboys-Washington Redskins game that will decide the NFC East is moving to prime time.

The NFL says that Dallas' matchup with rival Washington on Dec. 30 would be on NBC's "Sunday Night Football."

Starting in Week 11, the league's flexible scheduling policy allows it to move a more appealing game to Sunday night. This is the second time this season a switch has been made.

The Cowboys are 8-7 heading into their trip to Washington, which beat the Cowboys 38-31 on Thanksgiving. The Redskins are 9-6.

Another matchup with playoff implications, Packers-Vikings, shifts to 4:25 p.m. EST on Fox.

For the first time, English-speaking Oromo Diaspora and those Oromo at home who speak English can now benefit from it. The Oromo in Diaspora can now learn to read, write and speak their own language, be at their own home comfort, at their work places, at their community centers, and elsewhere. This has been a problem that I have seen exist while I was at home that you could not buy a single complete handbook to learn Afan Oromo unless you go to school to learn, and this has been true for the Diaspora as well. Now, this gap has been fulfilled, the next major tasks are to produce Afan Oromo books in other major world languages, such as Afan Oromo?German, Afan Oromo?Arabic, Afan Oromo?French, etc. I hope this work will give some guidance for those who will embark upon these timely tasks.

I say, this is a must have book. It has all the ingredients required to learn Afan Oromo. It consists of ? the alphabet, essential grammar to learn the system of the language, personal introductions and descriptions, numerous dialogues, questions and answers, positives and negatives, imperative forms and commands, knowing Oromo family, what is the homes, foods and related words, Oromo time reckoning, counting in Oromo, money matters, health matters, important phrases and vocabularies, and miscellaneous exercises for each chapter. The book is written exactly the way the Oromo speak to one another based on their culture. Every sentence in this book is written carefully to reflect the culture of the people. So, it is a living book, and when you talk to the book, you can feel one another and engage in real communication, thus you will learn proper usage of words and speak the language properly.

For the first time, in this book, the rules of writing Afan Oromo are precisely described and presented with appropriate examples. All unwanted complications that make harder to learn the alphabet, such as the so-called ?combined letters,? ?hudhaa? and ?irra-butaa? are either eliminated from the alphabet or described exactly what it is, to make as simple as possible to learn the alphabet in a very short time. Various examples and adequate exercises are provide to enable you master the alphabet in no time. Furthermore, the grammar of the language has been described in such a way to make the learning very interesting by providing examples and numerous exercises to navigate through the language easily. The book is also written in chapters to be read consecutively, so, at the end, you can challenge yourself with miscellaneous exercises based on the entire book.

I call it a ?one-stop? shopping where everything you need to learn this language is in one package.

Having read the book, I am also compelled to tell you that, those who can read, write and speak the Oromo language, can learn more, with so much obvious further additions added to this book, such as the use of ?fi,? ?dha,? ?the definite article? and the emphasis put to write what is said in Oromo to mention a few. Above all, I admire the clarity, and how it is made simply to learn the language. The book speaks to me and I speak to it. I felt the interconnections of the entire sections of the book. Finally, this is a single book that one can rely on to learn Afan Oromo. The time to buy many different and confusing books to learn how to read, write and speak the Oromo language has gone by. I definitely say, well done, and this is a worthwhile contribution to the ongoing development of the Oromo language.

Best Animal Videos Of 2012: The Cutest, Funniest And Most Popular Clips Of The Year

As 2012 comes to an end, it's a good time to reflect and remember the most important stories of the year. So let's be honest: wacky, cute and fascinating animal videos stole the show.

This was a particularly good year for animal watching: Viewers saw Siku the polar bear grow up on a live webcam, a monkey traipse through IKEA and sloth mania take the world by storm.

Unfortunately, some of this year's animal stories left us little to smile at.
