Video: Alleged 9/11 mastermind to be arraigned

Although the case has been on hold for more than three years while the Obama administration tried unsuccessfully to move it to civilian court, Khalid Sheik Mohammed and four co-defendants will stand before a military tribunal at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. NBC?s Michael Isikoff discusses.

>>> more than ten years after 9/11, a major step forward in the case against the self-proclaimed mastermind of the attacks, khalid sheikh mohammed , will be arraigned tomorrow in guantanamo bay . four defendants will also be arraigned. the case had been on hold more than three years while the obama administration tried unsuccessfully to move it to civilian court. national news investigative correspondent michael isikoff joins us now by phone from cuba. what can we expect to see, michael?

>> reporter: well, the real answer is nobody knows . there is a lot of big questions about how this proceeding will go. the last time khalid sheikh mohammed , the master mind faced the court arraignment herering used it as a soap box to denounce the u.s. proclaim himself a martyr. and continue to take pride in what he did in orchestrating the attacks of 9/11. he also refused to accept his lawyers. and he got all the other four co-defendants to do the same thing. we still don't know whether these 9/11 defendants tomorrow will accept their lawyers. that's part of the arraignment process. how they will plead in the case. you can expect khalid sheikh mohammed as previously took pride in orchestrating 9/11 but there is some question about that. and on top of that, the defense lawyers for the u.s. military [ inaudible ] have raised just the last few days a lot of legal challenges to the proceedings and rules under which they're operating to make it difficult to communicate and represent their clients, and that will raise some really important legal issues as well. so while tomorrow is definitely a big day , you how it will play out is far from clear.

>> we know five 9/11 family members were chosen by lottery. they're traveling to guantanamo for the arraignment. thank you very much, michael.
