HICKORY, N.C. -- A damaging EF-2 tornado tore apart homes and lives in Burke County Wednesday. Amid all the images of destruction came more bad news for Barbara Ingram when she got a call from her insurance company.?
?They told me they might not cover the claim,? said Ingram.
Barbara was shocked. After all, she has owned the home for 42 years and said she has made every insurance payment on time every time.
NewsChannel 36 Consumer Investigator Bill McGinty called the Nationwide Insurance Agent to ask why the claim wouldn?t be covered. Mrs. Ingram was told it might be denied because she wasn?t living in the home full time. Ingram?s son Bob lives there with his wife, and the elder Ingrams split their time between the home in south Hickory and another home.
On the phone, the Nationwide agent told NewsChannel 36 there must be a mistake and that the claim would more than likely be covered. In fact, the agent went as far to say there would be ?no problem.?
If you have a renter's or homeowner?s policy, be sure you check it from time to time to see what it covers, and more importantly what isn?t covered. It is a good idea to check with your insurance agent every other year to make sure your policy fits your current needs.
